STRONGSVILLE, Ohio---The Union Home Mortgage Foundation, the charitable arm of Union Home Mortgage whose mission is to equip families with the tools and resources needed to achieve economic self-sufficiency, has announced its grant recipients for the second quarter of 2022. The recipients include six nonprofits in Ohio, Michigan and North Carolina that received grants totaling $25,000.

With this round of quarterly donations, the Foundation provided support to organizations within its operational footprint that are making a tangible impact in their communities through the advancement of financial literacy, workforce development opportunities, education and housing access.

“At Union Home Mortgage, we are working to fight economic inequality by supporting organizations effecting change in the areas we live and work,” said Bill Cosgrove, President & CEO of Union Home Mortgage and Chairman of the Foundation. “By partnering with dynamic nonprofits, we’re able to offer essential tools and resources to help our neighbors establish a foundation of financial independence that will guide them throughout their lives.”

The second quarter 2022 grant recipients are:

Cleveland, Ohio

  • Cuyahoga Land Bank Charities - $5,000 to support the organization’s Special Population Matching Grant Program, which facilitates the return of vacant and abandoned properties to a productive use by housing vulnerable and underserved populations. Properties are either renovated or acquired and transferred to community organizations at no or low cost. Since 2011, the program has assisted nonprofit and faith-based partners to reclaim over 150 dwellings in Northeast Ohio.
  • Empowering and Strengthening Ohio’s People - $5,000 to support its project, Strengthening Communities Through Affordable and Sustainable Homes. Low- to moderate-income clients receive many forms of housing and financial counseling to equip them with the knowledge and skills to achieve homeownership, housing stability and financial literacy. Educational workshops, matched savings, benefit enrollment and assistance from a nonprofit, full-service brokerage is provided so clients can achieve their housing and financial goals.
  • Reach Out and Read Greater Cleveland - $5,000 to support its Early Literacy Programming Through Pediatric Care. This program assists trained doctors and nurses by integrating literacy promotion into primary care clinics during checkups. Providers educate parents on the importance of literacy, offer community health resources, and ensure each family has access to books. Sixty-six percent of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, so it is vital for children to develop early language skills through exposure to books during crucial stages of brain development.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

  • Home Repair Services of Kent County - $5,000 to assist with funding for the Foreclosure Intervention Counseling and Financial Education program. Clients are paired with a counselor who completes a full assessment of mortgage delinquency, conducts an extensive budget analysis, discusses the available options, and assists with any desired negotiations. Financial education workshops are taught by staff, partners and community experts to help families financially prepare for housing emergencies.

Lansing, Michigan

  • Capital Area Housing Partnership - $2,500 in support of the Building Capital program, which provides housing and financial counseling for low- to moderate-income populations to empower them to achieve long-term financial success and homeownership. Each client is paired with a HUD-certified counselor to review their situation and develop a personalized plan of action. Clients attend educational workshops to learn from experts in the field who provide the skills and tools needed to improve their financial situation and break cycles of poverty that act as a barrier to homeownership.

Wilmington, North Carolina

  • Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry - $2,500 to assist with rebuilding projects and safety-related home repairs, which are provided free-of-charge to low-income homeowners. A construction supervisor, volunteers and materials are made available for each project to help restore the home and make it a healthy and safe place to live. These projects preserve existing affordable housing by rebuilding deteriorating housing stock, making housing accessible for the elderly, disabled and people impacted by natural disasters.

“Our Foundation is on a mission to find permanent solutions to improve the lives of families and individuals in our communities, and we see the same commitment from these organizations,” said Ashley Ali, Interim Executive Director of the Union Home Mortgage Foundation. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to assist them in promoting access to much-needed tools and resources, and we look forward to partnering with them to make an impact locally.”

Since its inception in 2015, the Foundation has distributed more than $1 million in financial support to nonprofits in 14 states. For more information on the Union Home Mortgage Foundation, visit www.uhmfoundation.org, call 440.863.3217 or email aali@uhm.com.
